REVIEW OF SEEING GREEN BY ANNABEL HERTZ (CONTEST-USA ONLY)

I want to welcome Annabel Hertz to Books R Us. Annabel is the author of Seeing Green and is touring the blogosphere with JKS Communications. Thanks for stopping by.

About the Book:

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51naMIoRRmL._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_.jpgWith clever social commentary and her own experience in the political realm, author Annabel Hertz will get readers “Seeing Green” in no time.

Her new book “Seeing Green” (April 15, 2014) steps into the world of cutthroat politics and environmental policy as seen through the eyes of a young multicultural woman whose personal life seems to parallel her professional life as an activist on the front lines of Washington D.C. in the ’90s. Never afraid to articulate her personal convictions, Hertz’s modern day heroine is strong and profound, yet humorous and relatable.

“Seeing Green” is Hertz’s first endeavor in historical fiction, reviewed on The Huffington Post as “timely, energetic and witty.”

Much like the protagonist she introduces in “Seeing Green,” Hertz has delved into the world of politics with organizations involved in international relations and sustainable development. More recently, she served as a policy consultant, adjunct professor at the Geneva School of Diplomacy and International Relations and Global Governance Fellow at the World Economic Forum.

About the Author:
“Seeing Green” is Hertz’s debut novel. She holds master’s degrees from Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and San Francisco State University, as well as a bachelor’s degree from the University of California where she studied politics. Hertz is currently pursuing a doctorate in international relations at American University in Washington D.C.

My Thoughts-

I really enjoyed Annabel's first book. It was very informative, and enlightened me on the inner workings of NGOS in Washington DC. I found the novel humorous, and entertaining. It  was well written and was easy to read. I finished the book rather quickly and I connected with the main character Arcani. She had a personality that was strong willed and she maintained her principles even after some hardships. I recommend the to anyone who wants to learn a little bit about politics and  how it can affect everything.

PROMO AND GIVEAWAY OF DARKNESS BEFORE DAWN BY KELLIE WALLACE

Darkness Before Dawn - PROMO Blitz
By Kellie Wallace

Historical Fiction
Date Published: 7/17/2013

In June 1940, Germany bombed the Island of Guernsey, bringing World War II to the Channel Islands. With her home in the midst of war, jazz singer Catherine La Mar must
adapt to change. Within days, the island is overun. Resistance cells start to emerge, hindering the German forces. Catherine’s life is inevitably changed when childhood friend Thomas Potter is linked as the ringleader to one of the Island’s biggest cells.

The people she once knew are no longer who they seem to be. But nothing could prepare her for when she meets Nazi officer Captain Max Engel. Her view on the war forever changes when she is given a chance for love and new beginnings. For once in her mundane life she unveils her true self, as Max teaches her how to truly live. Their love puts a strain on Catherine’s family, risking the lives her sisters and friends. As the war intensifies and
divides the people on Guernsey, Max and Catherine must decide if their love is really worth risking it all?

EXCERPT
Plush greenery cushioned Catherine’s as she trudged

through the knee-length grass towards the cliff face. A violent wind came up from the sea whipping at her dress and hair. Brightly colored daisies and narcissi flowers dotted the swaying plain.

A sense of ease and sovereignty came over her as she stood in the wind, moving gently against its brunt. German tankers tarnished the vast ocean in front of her. Seagulls and kestrels sang in the air, catching the passing wind like dancers.
She always loved coming here to revel in nature’s beauty, believing nothing will ever change it. With the occupation taking force, it seems inevitable the world she knew will never be the same again.

Visiting the cliff tops on her own was risk, but as headstrong as she might be, Catherine wanted a release, to see a part of Guernsey not yet touched by the Reich. She slunk past German patrols on her way, blending into the environment like a chameleon.

As she stared out into blue azure of the ocean, movement in the corner of her eye caught her attention. A young man teetered on the edge of the cliff, peering over the brink.

Without a second thought, she ran towards him, slowing her pace when he saw her approach. His eyes wide with fear.“I’ll do it,” he warned, his body stiff as though he was still deciding to jump. The wind grew stronger and the man appeared to be using all of his strength to stay upright.
</ div>

“Are you alright, sir?” she asked calmly.</ div>

His hair was blown high on top of his head and the wind already made its mark upon his skin. “No . . .”

“Did you lose something?” Catherine said carefully.

“Has someone fallen off the cliff?”

“I don’t want . . . I don’t want this,” he cried.</ span>

“Don’t want what?”

The man stole a quick glance towards the tankers dotting the ocean horizon and turned back to Catherine. “I don’t want them,” he yelled, pointing towards the sea. “I don’t want to be ruled by those murderers!”

Catherine now understood the catalyst to the man’s distress. No one on Guernsey wanted an occupation by the Germans. Half the population had fled in terror.

Catherine took another step closer, wary of the fear in his brown eyes as she did so. She reached out her hand until they were inches apart. “What’s your name?”

“Ben.”

“Ben, what about you with come with me and grab a nice piece of cake at the cake shop? How does that sound?”

The young man shook his head furiously. “No, they will be there! They have taken over everything!”

“No, they won’t be,” Catherine said slowly. “It will only be you and me.”

Ben looked behind him to the crashing waves below, his body limp in defeat. He let out a sigh and turned towards her. “Okay,I will come with you.” He reached for her hand, when another voice broke through the defiant wind.

"What’s going on here?”

Catherine glanced over her should to see a young German officer standing behind them, bracing against the wind.

Ben’s eyes widened at the sight and he started to back up towards the edge of the cliff. “No, no, no,” he mumbled, slipping on the lip of the cliff.

Heart pounding, Catherine stretched out her hand to the distressed youth. “Ben! Please, come with me,” she ordered, ignoring the figure behind her.

Ben shook his head, his hands outstretched as though seeking redemption from above. “I’m sorry. I cannot do it,” he said. “Not with him around.” Ben’s swollen eyes glanced at</ span>Catherine once more, before turning into the wind, and jumping off the cliff.

“Nooo!” Her body flashed hot then cold as she fell to her knees in the damp grass, her hand stretched outright, grasping nothing but thin air. She felt the officer brush past her as he poked his head over the cliff.

The man’s body lay crucified on the rocks, blood speckling the blue ocean water.

Catherine ignored the tugging on her arm as the German officer hauled her to her feet. Violently, she pushed him away.

“Get off me!” she screamed, regaining her footing.

He was close now, close enough she could see the lines of youth etched in his face.

“What is your name?” he asked calmly.</ div>

“Catherine La Mar.” She almost spat her name at him.

The officer dipped his head in a polite greeting as if what happened meant nothing to him. “May I see your papers?” he asked, bringing out his hand.

Catherine sucked in a breath of indignation and pulled her papers, which consisted of an identity card and birth certificate from a pocket in her dress. She watched him as he scanned them over. It was the first time she managed to have a good look at him.

It was his eyes that caught her breath, standing out in contrast to his dull uniform. They were the same shade of the sea, crashing and spitting below them. His straw-coloured hair was slicked under his visor cap. He was the perfect example of Hitler’s Aryan race.

The officer handed her papers back to her. She wanted a fight; wanted anything to contest him. “Why didn’t you stop him?” she asked.

REVIEW OF THE TERMINALS (THE SPARK) BY MICHAEL F. STEWART.(CONTEST)

I want to welcome Michael Stewart to Books R Us. Michael is the author of The
Terminals (Spark) as well as several other interesting works of art that includes graphic stories, novels, software and non fiction titles. Please visit Michael's Amazon page to learn more about his other works. Thanks for stopping by.

About the Book:

Sometimes the dead don’t want to talk.
You need Terminals to make them.

Terminals solve crimes in this realm by investigating them in the next.

Lt. Col. Christine Kurzow, fresh from a failed suicide attempt after she cost 11 of her soldiers their lives, is recruited into the covert unit of Terminals as a handler. It's an easy sell. If she's really determined to die, it’s a chance to give her death meaning.

But her first case—convincing a monk to chase Hillar the Killer into the afterlife to find the location of a missing bus and the children it carried—has her wondering how to make a dead psychopath talk.

Christine must follow the clues sent back by the shotgun-toting monk, who tracks Hillar through the seven deeps of hell, so she can find eleven kids before it’s too late.

Maybe this time killing a man will give Christine a reason to live.
About the Author:

Michael F. Stewart is the author of the Assured Destruction series, which sprawls across 3 books, 2 websites, 1 blog, 7 Twitter accounts, tumblr, Facebook, and 6 graphic origin stories. He likes to combine storytelling with technology and pioneered interactive storytelling with Scholastic Canada, Australia and New Zealand’s, anti-cyberbullying program Bully For You. He has authored four graphic novels with Oxford University Press Canada’s award winning Boldprint series. Publications of nonfiction titles on Corruption and Children’s Rights published by Rubicon Publishing as well as early readers with Pearson are all forthcoming in 2014 and 2015.

For adults, Michael has written THE SAND DRAGON a horror about a revenant prehistoric vampire set in the tar sands, HURAKAN a Mayan themed thriller which pits the Maya against the MS-13 with a New York family stuck in the middle, 24 BONES an urban fantasy which draws from Egyptian myth, and THE TERMINALS—a covert government unit which solves crimes in this realm by investigating them in the next. This series has already been optioned for film and television.

Herder of four daughters, Michael lives to write in Ottawa where he runs free writing workshops for teens and adults. Please come find me on Goodreads.

My Thoughts.

I have always been a fan of the ghosts and the supernatural. I found the book to be intense, well written, and horrifying. I was hooked from the first page and finished the book rather quickly but it was emotionally draining when I was finished. If you are squeamish and dislike horror movies then this is not the book for you. All of the scenes were extremely graphic and takes you to hell and back but the author is able to bring you back to reality with his excellent writing skills. I have never read a book like this one and I wonder what he has in store for us in book two of the series. Bravo Michael for writing such a twisted and original novel! So if you think you can handle it then pick up a copy for yourself or enter Michael's contest.

REVIEW OF THE HUNGRY FAMILY SLOW COOKER COOKBOOK BY CHRISTINA DYMOCK

I want to welcome Christina Dymock to Books R Us. Christine is the author of The Hungry Family Slow Cooker Cookbook as well as numerous other cook books. Thanks for stopping by.

About the Book:

It is every busy mother's dream-come-true: dinner that makes itself! With the help of your trusty slow cooker and these healthy, easy recipes like Peppery Cilantro Salmon, Sausage Stew, and Dark Chocolate Mini Cakes, you can put dinner on the table even on the craziest of days. Don t let the whirlwind of life
stop you from feeding your family the food they deserve -- delicious, home-cooked meals straight from your slow cooker.

 About the Author:

Christina Dymock was once at a dinner party where her husband was teasing her about the frosting-to-cupcake ratio on her dessert. The woman sitting across from them sniffed her delicate nose and said, "If my husband gave me a hard time about my frosting I'd quit baking. That'd show him." To which Christina's husband replied while pointing at his speechless wife, "Try to stop her!"

Christina divides her time between the kitchen and her computer and books and her family of six. (Naturally, the family gets the biggest share.) Because she reads everything, she also feels compelled to write in several genres.

My Thoughts:

I love cooking with my slow cooker and I am always looking for new recipes to try.  Christina's book was easy to read and loaded with fantastic pictures and tips. I never knew you could put in frozen chicken or beef in a slow cooker. I always defrosted the meat ahead of time. I made the Turkey Joes before I left for work and unfortunately I was not able to get a picture of the finished meal because my family devoured it before I got home from work ( I worked later than usual). They left me a portion to try. We all loved the Turkey Joes and they asked me to try another recipe from the book. The Turkey Joes were seasoned and were cooked just right. We needed some extra napkins that night. So if you are looking to save some time and money then get a copy of the book.

REVIEW OF REDUXA FAT BURNER WEIGHT LOSS DIETARY SUPPLEMENT AND ENERGY BOOSTER

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

I have always looking for products that are safe and effective to help me loose weight. I struggle with my weight every day. Let me tell you about the product.

Reduxa Fat Burner Weight Loss Dietary Supplement and energy Booster  contains a proprietary formula designed to maximize weight loss by boosting fat loss and improving energy level that is safe and effective for men and women and is made in the USA.
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HHMHKMK/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00HHMHKMK&linkCode=as2&tag=ginhigthenov-20
  •  Garcinia Cambogia Extract has been known to hasten weight loss efforts, where some researchers claim that it can double or triple one's weight loss. With proper dieting and exercise, the average person taking garcinia cambogia extract lost an average of four pounds a month. It is also known to work great for emotional eaters. Those who participated in the study showed an increase in their serotonin levels; hence, it may also improve mood and sleeping patters. It works by blocking fat and suppressing appetite.
  • Green Tea Extract contains compounds called catechins that may affect how your body burns calories and metabolizes fat, thereby helping in weight loss.
  •  Guggul Extract helps boost metabolism and is believed to reduce cholesterol.
  • Raspberry Ketone is an aromatic component present in raspberries and other fruits. Scientists had previously shown that it causes fat breakdown. It prevents and improves obesity and fatty liver by stimulating the metabolism.

My Thoughts:

I have tried other products that were not effective and either made me jumpy or nauseous and expensive. I have been using the product for a month now and I felt that it has increased my energy and has not made me jumpy. I have lost approx 5 lbs over the last month by eating sensibly, exercising(2-3 x week- inconsistently). Overall the product is working for me and is convenient to use. Some products require you to take numerous pills a day and I would forget to take the other doses. Reduxa only needs to be taken daily in the morning. Please see my disclaimer here.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

 My Thoughts:

I was impressed by the product. It suds up easily and the exfoliation crystals did not irritate my skin. The scent is not overpowering and a little goes a long way. My hands felt soft and smooth after using the products a couple of times. I thought that the Water Blossom fragrance would smell more like flowers but it had a more fruity smell to it. I preferred it over the Coconut Lime Verbena hand soap because it was less overpowering.

REVIEW OF AMARA ORGANICS VITAMIN C SERUM

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

I am always looking for products that can help my skin. I would like to introduce you to Amara Organics Vitamin C Serum.

Enjoy radiant, youthful skin again with our potent blend of ingredients, professionally formulated using the highest quality Vitamin C, E, and Hyaluronic Acid available.

Our Vitamin C Serum replenishes your skin’s vitamin C levels to give you these benefits:

-Increases the production of collagen to bring back skin’s natural elasticity and counteract fine lines and wrinkles
-Powerful antioxidant properties neutralize free radicals to reverse damage caused by the sun, pollutants, and cigarette smoke
-Protects your skin from UV damage such as age spots, discoloration, and fine lines
-Improves skin texture to give you a smoother, brighter complexion
-Combined with Vitamin E and Hyaluronic Acid for extra powerful anti-aging effects

My Thoughts:

I have tried many products that never delivered as promised. I found the Vitamin C Serum to be very beneficial. I have been using the product for about a month and have found that my skin has improved. I suffer from rosacea and many products irritate my skin and make the condition worse. I did use my prescription gel before applying the serum. The serum did not cause any irritation, was not sticky and did reduce fine lines and wrinkles. All I needed was a two drops to cover my entire face evenly. The product lasts along time since I still have 3/4 of a bottle left. So if you want to try a new product that may work for you then give the vitamin C serum a try.
