INTERVIEW OF ROBERT PIELKE AUTHOR OF THE NOVEL THE TRANSLATOR (GIVEAWAY)

I want to welcome Robert G. Pielke to Books R Us. Robert is the author of the novel A New Birth Of Freedom: The Translatorbook two of the trilogy. Thanks for stopping by.

 Interview

Can you tell me who or what was the inspiration for the book?

** There were many things that led to this trilogy, but it all came together when I discovered the underlying issue of the story – fundamental rights. What criteria should we use when deciding who has such rights? It was over this the fundamental issue that led to the Civil War and the issue that will arise in our eventual contact with extraterrestrial intelligent life. Stephen Hawking recently raised the issue again, when he counseled against having any contact with other ET species. Although my trilogy is an alternate-history and a time-travel tale, the story is driven by this concern.

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it?

** I don’t think such a thing exists. Either someone has something they want to write or they don’t. If you have nothing to say…then it stands to reason that you won’t be able to write anything.

Can you tell me your experiences in finding a publisher for the book?

** My first publication was a nonfiction book on rock music in American culture – in the 80’s of the pervious century. Nelson-Hall, a traditional publisher picked my proposal up right away and another publisher immediately picked up its sequel. So I thought getting published was going to be a snap! Not so with fiction – especially genre fiction, and even more especially when I combined a few different kinds of genre fiction. For my trilogy, I had to shop the proposal around to TONS of publishers before one was willing to take something a bit odd.

What do you like to do for fun when you’re not writing?  Where do you like to vacation?  Can you tell us briefly about this?

** I usually give a kind of cavalier answer to this….”sex, drugs and rock and roll.” But, to be specific, I cook, ski [blues and greens], watch loads of movies, swim daily, listen to all kinds of rock music, and then do it all over again.

How long did it take you to write the book and how long did it take to get the book released?

** It’s difficult to be precise, because the real beginnings are never written down – there are a bunch of ideas just rolling around in your head and you “play with them” for a long time. Suffice it to say, the “playing” with this book began many years ago. From the typed words to release – probably about 3-4 years.

Who is your favorite character in the book and why?

** I don’t think I have one. I enjoy writing “for” all of them, but that’s not to say I “like” [or “dislike”] any of them. Writing for my female character was, of course, challenging, but since the Point of View is from my protagonist’s perspective [“universal limited,” I believe is the precise term for what I’m doing, I have an “out.” The reader “sees” her through the eyes of my protagonist.

What are your current / future projects?

** Right now, I’m working on the final book of the trilogy. AND I’m collaborating with a screenwriter for converting the first book into a film. But in the more distant future, I have two books under consideration: One is a fantasy sci-fi about humans discovering that there is a species here on earth that has been trying to contact us for millennium…they finally succeed! The other is a literary novel about the relationship between Viet Nam vets and Viet Nam protesters.

Do you have any tips for a young writer just starting out?

** Just write!! Write anything! Write all of the time! Consider ALL of what you write a writing exercise.

If your book was to be made into a movie, who would you like the main character to be played by and why?

** “When” perhaps!!?? Hahahahah I have no one in mind for the lead – But I wouldn’t ‘t mind Daniel Day Lewis do Lincoln!!

Book Review - A New Birth of Freedom: The Translator

About the Book

Noam Chomsky argues that communication with aliens would be impossible. Stephen Hawking argues that it would be extremely unwise even to try. What if it were absolutely necessary to do so? This question arises with extreme urgency at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863, in this time-travel, alternate-history trilogy, A New Birth of Freedom.

About the Author
Robert Pielke, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, now lives in Claremont, California. He earned a B.A. in History at the University of Maryland, an M. Div. in Systematic Theology at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, and a Ph.D. in Social Ethics from the Claremont Graduate School.

He taught on ground and online for countless years at George Mason University in Virginia, El Camino College in California and online for the University of Phoenix. Now happily retired from “the job,” he is doing what he always wanted to do since he wrote his first novel at ten in elementary school. It was one paragraph, three pages long and, although he didn’t know it at the time, it was alternate history.

His academic writings have been in the area of ethics, including a boring academic treatise called Critiquing Moral Arguments, logic, and popular culture. Included in the latter is an analysis of rock music entitled You Say You Want a Revolution: Rock Music in American Culture. He has also published short stories, feature articles, film and restaurant reviews. His novels include a savagely satirical novel on America and its foibles, proclivities and propensities, Hitler the Cat Goes West, and an alternate history, science fiction novel, The Mission.

Most recently, he has updated and revised his book on rock music, which is being republished by McFarland and Co.

He swims daily, skis occasionally, cooks as an avocation, watches innumerable movies, collects rock and roll concert films, is an avid devotee of Maryland crabs and maintains a rarely visited blog filled with his social and political ravings. His favorite film is the original Hairspray; his favorite song is “A Day in the Life”; his favorite pizza is from the original Ledo Restaurant in College Park, MD; and he is a firm believer in the efficacy of “sex, drugs and rock and roll.” Somehow his family and friends put up with him.

My Thoughts:

I have always been a fan of historical and Sci-Fi novels and the author was able to incorporate time travel in the storyline. I did find the book difficult to read because I did not have the opportunity to read the first book in the series. I was a bit confused on who all of the characters were and how they fit into the storyline. There was no description of the pests until the middle of the book but I guessed that they were insect like creatures from the future. I recommend that you read the first book in the series since the Translator is not a stand alone novel. The novel was well researched and included the major players in the Civil War period with the added twist of time travel. If you are a history/Sci-FI fan then this is the book for you.

REVIEW OF NEW HOME FOR LILY (THE ADVENTURES OF LILY LAP- BOOK 2) BY M.A. KINSINGER & S. FISHER

New Home for Lily, A (The Adventures of Lily Lapp) by Suzanne Woods Fisher, Mary Ann Kinsinger
Genre: YA, Amish, Christian, Children
Publisher: Revell
Publication Date: February 1, 2013
Purchase Book: Amazon, Barnes & Noble.

About the Book:

Lily Lapp is moving with her family to Pennsylvania to join a new Amish community. In this small town where changes--and newcomers--are greeted with suspicion, Lily must adjust to a new school, new friends, and Aaron Yoder, an annoying boy who teases her relentlessly. Still, there are exciting new developments, including an attic full of adventure and a new baby brother. But why, Lily wonders, can't God bring her just one sister?

The second novel in the charming Adventures of Lily Lapp series, A New Home for Lily gives children ages 8-12 a fascinating glimpse into the life of the Amish--and lots of fun and laughter along the way. It combines the real-life stories of growing up Amish from Mary Ann Kinsinger and the bestselling writing of Amish fiction and nonfiction author Suzanne Woods Fisher. With line illustrations throughout, this series is sure to capture the hearts of readers young and old.

My Thoughts:

I had the opportunity to read the first book in the series and book two is just as good. Lily  gets to learn about death, relationships and has a life that is different from ours. Although the book was written for the younger reader, adults will enjoy the book also. The Amish have a life that is so much simpler than ours  but Lily knows how to have fun and enjoy life. I highly recommend the book because it is full of adventure, great characters, and short chapters that will keep you engaged. I look forward to reading book three in the series.

“Available February 2013 at your favorite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group.”

My Thoughts:

This is a mystical, magical, educational and interesting novel that every one should enjoy especially children. Full of memorable characters that will entertain and educate you. Her description of India and it's people was fantastic and I felt that I was right there with the characters interacting with them. Many historical novels have bored me but Brynn has written a novel that kept me engaged, and interested.  I finished the book rather quickly and I stayed up late to finish it.  I definitely recommend that you read this book and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series to be set in Jerusalem.

REVIEW OF THE NEIGHBORS BY ANIA AHLBORN

Title: The Neighbors
Authors:  Ania Ahlborn
Publisher:
Thomas & Mercer

Date Published:
November 27, 2012
Purchase Book:
Amazon, Barnes & Noble

About the Book:

Everything—his childhood, his education, and the girl of his dreams—to look after his alcoholic mother. But enough is enough, and now he’s determined to get out and live his life. That means trading the home he grew up in for a rented room in the house of an old childhood friend— both of which are in sorry shape.
The only thing worse than Drew’s squalid new digs and sullen new roommate is the envy he feels for the house next door: a picture-perfect suburban domicile straight out of Norman Rockwell, with a couple of happy householders to match. But the better acquainted he gets with his new neighbors—especially the sweet and sexy Harlow Ward—the more he suspects unspeakable darkness beyond the white picket fence.

About the Author:

Born in Ciechanów, Poland, Ania Ahlborn is also the author of the supernatural thriller Seed, and is currently working on her third novel. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of New Mexico, enjoys gourmet cooking, baking, drawing, traveling, movies, and exploring the darkest depths of the human (and sometimes inhuman) condition. She lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with her husband and two dogs.

My Thoughts:

What a great psychological thriller. It was full of characters who were twisted, disturbed and they kept me engaged and interested. The main character Harlow was unpredictable showing up when you never expected it and the other characters complimented her personality well. This is one of the best books that I have read this year and I definitely will read her next book The Shuddering due out early 2013. A great read and highly recommended.

Now that the cold and flu season is upon us. Hand washing is one of the best way to prevent getting sick and spreading illness and Dial has made it easy to do that. Dial Complete Foaming Hand Wash has introduced four limited edition designs perfect for the holiday season. Santa,Snowman,Candy Cane and Holiday Scene. You can brighten up your sink with these cheerful designs and prevent spreading germs to your family and friends.

These seasonal bottles contain Dial Complete's # 1 Doctor recommended antibacterial foaming hand wash.  The formula kills 99% of germs encountered in the household while still being gentle on the skin. I have tried liquid soaps and have found that they do not rinse off very easily but the Dial foaming hand wash works great. It has a fragrance that is not heavy or irritating. You will love how the foam feels on your skin.

Dial provided me with a free sample of their Holiday Foaming Hand Soap so I could review them. However, all of the opinions expressed here are my own.

REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY OF 2:32 AM BY EMILY FORD.

About the Book:

AND THE STORY BEGINS...

In the early morning hours nearing her 17th birthday, Cat Townsend woke to the sudden blur of a mysterious unknown man sitting on the edge of her bed. She did not feel fear -- rather a strange calmness overtook her. In an instant their eyes locked, he lightly touched her hand, and then he disappeared into the nothingness of night.

Caught in that undefined place between asleep and awake, the moment felt hazy and surreal. A chill ran down Cat’s spine as she glances at the time – it’s 2:32 a.m.

What unfolds in the first book of The Djinn Master’s Legacy trilogy, is young Cat’s personal struggle with the overwhelming choice to accept a destiny of magic. As she contemplates the merits of unparalleled power, her new and ordinary world in Savannah, Georgia is understandably shaken.  The closer her decision gets, the more  twisted her life with family, friends and boyfriend becomes. Will she choose to give up everything she cherishes?

My Thoughts:

At first, I did not know what to expect when I started reading the book. At first I found it slow moving but the action picked up halfway through the book. The main character Cat has vivid visions that occur numerous times throughout the book that slowly reveals her destiny. She is introduced to Genies and magic in a way that is confusing and intriguing. She is a typical teenager faced with difficult situations that makes her stronger.  She is in love with Todd and eventually finds her soul mate Rolf. This is a great supernatural-romance novel that will leave you guessing and engaged.

REVIEW OF SHE'S GOT ISSUES BOOK AND DVD BY NICOLE UNICE

Over the last couple of weeks, I have been reading and watching a new DVD curriculum called She's Got Issues: With Seriously Good News for Stressed-Out, Secretly Scared Control Freaks Like Us: A DVD Group Experience by Nicole Unice. It is designed for small group settings and is a six week course. The DVD includes a leader's guide and group handouts.

About the Book and DVD

We’ve all got our issues! Maybe you feel like life just isn’t going your way, or you’re afraid that you don’t measure up to other people’s expectations. Perhaps you have a hard time managing your temper or have someone in your life you just can’t forgive. We deal with our “issues” every day in one form or another; the problem is, after a while, they start to feel . . . normal. Unchanging. Just part of who we are. And we forget that we have access to the power of Christ—a power that can transform our everyday weaknesses into our greatest strengths and gifts.

In She’s Got Issues, Christian counselor, ministry leader, and regular mom Nicole Unice explores the ordinary issues that are keeping you from the full and free life you were meant to have. Applying years of counseling with practical scriptural teaching and a fresh and authentic voice, Nicole shows you how to let God freely shape your character—and transform your life from ordinary to abundant.

 My Thoughts:

The DVD and book are fantastic and full of information that is essential for all of us stressed out women. Nicole has a way with words and is able to bring faith into the book in a way that is not pushy and she made me think about my life. Chapter 7 "The Comparison Game" is an excellent chapter and discusses how we are constantly comparing ourselves to other people. She includes a assessment to find out where we fit in and how we can change our lives. According to the scores Nicole is able to provide us with insight and wisdom on how we can change the way we look at our selves and others.
All of the sessions on the DVD are short, easy to follow and just makes sense. The DVD discusses six major topics that include: Control, Insecurity, Comparisons, Fear, Anger and Unforgiveness. The DVD complements the book and I utilized the book when watching the DVD. I recommend that you obtain both the book and the DVD so you can get more information on the topic she is discussing.

REVIEW OF IDENTITY BY MARK HOSACK

  • Title: Identity
  • Author: Mark Hosack
  • Print Length: 330 pages
  • Publisher: Pocket Star (August 7, 2012)
  • Sold by: Simon and Schuster Digital Sales Inc
  • Language: English.
  • Purchase Book: Amazon, Barnes and Noble.

About the Book:
The corporate greed of Wall Street meets the Hitchcockian suspense of North by Northwest in this thrilling debut by screenwriter Mark Hosack.

A secret best told on the run…
One day Paul Majors is a respectable businessman looking into some accounting irregularities in his office’s parent company. The next, he’s wading through a murky world of dark finance, uncovering a vast web of illegal activities in the CEO’s executive circle, being hunted by a ruthless corporate assassin and the FBI, and getting sucked into a second company’s illicit dealings.
As he travels across the United States to unravel the twin mysteries he’s caught in, it’s not clear who Paul can trust—or even who is who. The woman who seduced him at the hotel bar might be there to help, or take him out. The government agents change with a chameleon’s ease. Heck, even Paul’s running around under an assumed name!
In this corporate shell game of names and motivations, Paul’s got 1,500 loyal employees—and his own life—on the line. But it’s becoming dangerously clear that Paul himself is not Too Big to Fail…or be killed.

My Thoughts

I was hooked from the first page and the novel is full of twists and turns that kept me guessing. The plot and characters were fantastic and all of the characters were believable. The major character Paul Majors finds himself in a world of deceit, mystery and suspense. Paul actually has a conscience and wants to find out what happened to his company and goes on a wild ride to find out. The author has a wonderful way with word and he has written a novel that is fast paced, easy to read and is an excellent debut novel.

REVIEW OF GOODBYE FOR NOW BY LAURIE FRANKEL.

In the spirit of ONE DAY, comes a fresh and warmhearted love story for the 21st century. Sometimes the end is just the beginning . . .

Sam Elling works for an internet dating company, but he still can't get a date. So he creates an algorithm that will match you with your soul mate. Sam meets the love of his life, a coworker named Meredith, but he also gets fired when the company starts losing all their customers to Mr. and Ms. Right.

When Meredith's grandmother, Livvie, dies suddenly, Sam uses his ample free time to create a computer program that will allow Meredith to have one last conversation with her grandmother. Mining from all her correspondence—email, Facebook, Skype, texts—Sam constructs a computer simulation of Livvie who can respond to email or video chat just as if she were still alive. It's not supernatural, it's computer science.

My Thoughts

The novel combines romance, technology, a bit of science fiction, humor and tears. I started to read the book while lounging near the pool on a cruise to the Bahamas and I could not put it down. All the characters and storyline was developed fully and was a page turner. While reading the novel, I asked myself numerous times if the use of technology to interact with the dead is ethical but I did enjoy the novel. I have to admit that I predicted the ending and it definitely fit the storyline. I wonder what the author is working on now?

REVIEW OF THE KEEPER OF THE DRAGONS BY EMMY MACKIE

Book Details:

Title: The Keeper of the Dragons (The Flute of Enchantment)
Author: Emmy Mackie
Publisher: Dorrance Publishing Co.
Publication Date: April 17, 2012
Purchase: Amazon|Barnes & Noble.

About the Book:

A long time ago, there were twin sisters who lived in Scotland, Hope and Eden. Hope became a keeper of the dragons at the age of six and lived in the Realm of the Dragons since then. Eden later married Prince Ballador of the kingdom of Ruine and became the mother of Prince James, who was supposed to be the next keeper after his Aunt Hope.
Having a unique power with the creatures, Hope nursed the young and the injured dragons. At their death, she comforts them. For her, the dragons had been her family. She was a beautiful lady, who possessed grace, intellect, and gallantry--traits which made men fall easily in love with her. With the war between humans and dragons over the past 1,000 years still looming, Hope had to muster her courage to fulfill her duty as the keeper of the dragons, even if it means losing the lives of many, including her beloved ones. The kingdom of Norr had a new queen, Ariana, and she s out to destroy the kingdom of Ruine and the Realm of the Dragons to avenge her kingdom s loss in the war at the time of King Grant, her predecessor. Ariana coaxed a plan to get the flute of enchantment, a musical instrument whose sound will lull the dragons to sleep, making them easier to kill. Will Hope and her friends and allies foil her schemes and stop Ariana s evil ambition? Or should they expect more battles and bloodshed ahead?

My Thoughts:

I have always been a fan of dragons and the mystery behind them. Hope is responsible for protecting the dragons and she develops a relationship with them that cannot be broken. The evil queen, Ariana wants to destroy the dragons with the Flute of Enchantment and Hope needs to stop her before it is too late and the dragons are destroyed. Ms. Mackie has written a novel that is full of magic, fantasy, adventure, evil and a bit of romance and definitely worth reading. I especially enjoyed the descriptions of the various dragons and their relationships with each other. If you like dragons then this is the book for you.
