6:00 A.M., TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2021
MINNESOTA CORRECTIONAL FACILITY – LINO LAKES
7525 4TH AVENUE, LINO LAKES

The cells in each pod at Lino are dull brown concrete with blue metal doors. I shiver as I glance out the thin side window, waiting for the day to start. Everybody wears two layers because there’s a chill that runs through this cellblock on a cold night that you can’t shake. The common area has blue metal tables and chairs bolted to the floor. It would be impossible to make a seat less comfortable than the flat steel circles mounted too close to our tables.

I’m tempted to call the Innocence Project. Dick Doden mur- dered my wife, Deb Grant. Doden testified that my friend, Roan Caruso, hired him for the hit. And that’s where the evidence ends. How the hell did I get convicted of murder-for-hire? Prosecutor Bridget Bare claimed the circumstantial evidence was over- whelming. But was it? Is taking out an insurance policy on your partner evidence of murder? Ten million dollars might have been a little excessive, but it’s not enough to convict a man of murder.

I had loaned Roan one hundred thousand dollars before Deb’s murder. That loan and the insurance were all they had. It was all circumstantial. Roan never implicated me.

Author Bio:

Frank Weber is a forensic psychologist who has completed assessments for homicide, sexual assault, and domestic abuse cases. His work has ranged from assessing murderers chained to the cement floor in the basement of a prison and assessing psychopaths to providing therapy for wealthy professionals who’ve engaged in multiple affairs. He has testified as an expert witness in numerous sexual assault and homicide cases, written seven different treatment workbooks, and in 2015 published a training series for psychologists which has been accredited by the MN Board of Psychology. He has received the President’s Award from the Minnesota Correctional Association for his forensic work, and recently received an award for excellence in his clinical work. Frank Weber has used his unique understanding of how predator’s think, victim trauma, and actual court cases to create a thrilling mystery. His debut novel, Murder Book, will be available in May, 2017.

My Thoughts:  

 

The author wrote an excellent thriller/mystery featuring believable characters and an engaging story line. Although some readers may find the story disturbing due to its violent content, I thoroughly enjoyed the novella. The audiobook narrator did a fantastic job of bringing the characters to life, allowing me to feel their emotions as I listened. I finished the book during my daily walk and found myself walking faster as the story progressed, so I walked further that day. The characters interacted well with one another, and I was pleasantly surprised by the ending. I had a few questions, but the author addressed them in the epilogue. It is always nice to read or listen to an interesting book with a plot that is not boring and is well-written.

God's Eye AudioMovie

I wish I could film myself while I listen to the God’s Eye AudioMovie.

You would probably laugh hysterically at me. I’m sure I make faces and even jump back a bit at the scary parts – which then makes me laugh hysterically at me. I have no good excuse to jump at the scary bits; I wrote them.

I find listening to a book to be a different experience than reading one. Though I have always been a reader, I’m definitely a listener now too. With the AudioMovie format, Stefan Rudnicki has lifted the audiobook to another level.

As an author, though I can write the story the way I want, I can never put in enough detail to make you hear the words exactly the way I hear it. Every time you read it you’ll hear and see things the way your brain performs the story and different things will have meaning because those things have meaning to you. When you watch a movie, you see what the director thinks the main character looks like and hear the words the way the actress believes the character would say them. But you still pay attention to the parts that have meaning to you.

An AudioMovie is a happy medium between the experiences of film and reading. Rudnicki does a fantastic job of using often subtle sounds to bring the experience more fully to life than what you would experience with a single reader. Hearing the conversations take place between two actors is a much richer experience than hearing even a phenomenal single actor perform the scene. Just like in real life, the two readers come at the story from two different perspectives, they use inflection differently and bring different interpretations to the characters.

Without the visuals, the story remains true to the version in your head. But that extra layer – the thing that makes even ME get involved or be surprised – is the use of the soundtrack and sound effects. Though I can picture the street a certain character lives on, hearing the chirp of birds and the soft rustle of the trees not only makes the setting come alive, but makes Katharine’s discovery there all the more startling.

So, if you could watch me listen to my own book, you would probably laugh at me. You would be amused as you watch my shoulders hunch up. Even though I know exactly what’s coming next, you’ll see my eyes close tight as I finally realize that low, rhythmic sound is the demon . . . sitting . . . right . . . behind me.

My Thoughts:

 I had the pleasure of receiving the book in the AudioMovie version and I was extremely impressed. I downloaded the entire novel on my Itouch and headed for the gym. The actors portraying the characters were fantastic and I could hear their emotions in their voices. Before I knew it, I had walked five miles. Sound effects were added that made me feel that I was part of the storyline. People talking in the background, footsteps,broken glass (that part made me jump) and many other interesting sounds. The beginning of the book was a little slow but toward the middle of the book the plot took off and I was hooked.  Katherine's soul is in jeopardy and she has to make a choice between good and Evil. When strange creatures show up in her apartment and strange passages are written on her mirror she questions her sanity. She heads to the library to find some answers and meets the Librarian Margo. The two of them try to find the answers to the strange occurrences. Katherine has two men in her life Allistair and Zachary who play havoc with her emotions. There are parts that were erotic and only for the adult reader. What choice does Katherine make? I guess you have to read the book to find out. I highly recommend the AudioMovie version of the book. So if you like thrillers, romance and the paranormal this is the book for you.

I have always been a fan of James Patterson especially the The Angel Experiment (Maximum Ride, Book 1)series. I was unaware that Worst Case was book three in the  Michael Bennett saga.

My Thoughts-

There was a lot of suspense, action and there were twists and turns that kept you engaged throughout the book. I especially enjoyed the interaction that Michael had with his children and the nanny. There were many subplots that are occurring at the same time that kept me interested. I enjoyed all the narrators in the audiobook. They made the characters appear realistic and they were able to show the emotions of the characters in their voices. James Patterson will always be one of my favorite writers.

My Thoughts-

This is the first book by David Baldacci that I have listened to and it will not be the last. Scott Bricks narration was wonderful and you were able to hear the emotions of the characters in his voice. I listened to the story while on the treadmill and before I knew it I had walked three miles. The book has it all deceit, suspense, and the plot and character development was great. The bonus short story No Time Left was good and interesting. I just won a copy of the Audiobook, True Blue and I am eager to listen to it. Mr. Baldacci will not let you down.
